FromFriedrich Wilhelm Murnau

WithMax Schreck, Gustav von Wangenheim, Greta Schröder, Alexander Granach, Ruth Landshoff, Wolfgang Heinz

Year1922

Duration94min.

The Wisborg estate agent Knock sends his employee Thomas Hutter to Transylvania to negotiate a property deal with the sinister Count Orlok. Once they arrive at the eerie castle, the occupant turns out to be a bloodthirsty shadow creature...

With NOSFERATU - A SYMPHONY OF GREY, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau not only created one of the first forerunners of the horror film genre and later Dracula adaptations, but also one of the multi-layered masterpieces of cinematic expressionism.

NOSFERATU - A SYMPHONY OF GREY is a formative example of the artistry of F. W. Murnau, who succeeded like no other director of his time in combining stylistic elements of Expressionism, literature, theatre and European painting in film. The premiere took place on 4 March 1922 in Berlin. A good 100 years later, the film classic has lost none of its fascination. The first feature-length vampire film in history and the memorable look and performance of lead actor Max Schreck as Count Orlok were style-defining for the horror genre and are still quoted in pop culture today.

On the first two dates (04.01. + 09.01.2025) we will be playing the F.W. Murnau Foundation version with original music by Hans Erdmann (recorded in 2005 by the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Berndt Heller).

On 12 January 2025, we will show the film silently with live musical accompaniment by Gerhard Gruber
