While his wife Jettel (JULIANE KÖHLER), a daughter from a middle-class family, finds it difficult to adjust to her new life, their once shy daughter Regina (LEA KURKA / KAROLINE ECKERTZ) blossoms on the foreign continent. She learns the language and customs and finds a good friend in the local cook Owuor (SIDEDE ONYULO). But the loss of their homeland and relatives and their inability to talk about it threatens Jettel and Walter's marriage, and they are slow to find their way back to each other. When the war finally ends, Walter is offered a job as a judge in Frankfurt. But after all the years they have spent appreciating life in Kenya, it is questionable whether Jettel and Regina will accompany him back to Germany...
