Ninotchka
A romantic comedy with a witty screenplay by Billy Wilder and Garbo in her first official American comedy. Soviet communism versus capitalism and in the middle of it all is probably the Soviet Union's most serious diplomat, Nina Ivanovna ‘Ninotchka’ Yakushova. She comes to Paris to secure a lucrative sale of jewellery confiscated during the Russian Revolution. At the same time, the carefree bachelor Count d'Algout tries to intercept the jewels in the name of their former owner, the Grand Duchess Swana. Despite their conflicting loyalties, the icy Ninotchka soon warms to the Count's charms. The film was successfully promoted internationally with ‘Garbo laughs!’. (Claudia Siefen)
