Young Elwood Curtis grows up with his grandmother in a poor part of Tallahassee, Florida and admires Martin Luther King. The 16-year-old African-American is actually well on his way to attending college and fighting for social justice himself. But then, in 1962, the teenager is falsely accused by the police of stealing a car. Sent to the segregated reform school called ‘Nickel Academy’, Elwood is confronted with abuse, torment and racism. A close friendship with his classmate Turner and his tenacious drive for change get the adolescent through this traumatic time.
Based on the 2019 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel ‘The Nickel Boys’ by Colson Whitehead, the film tells a true story. It is inspired by the historic reform school in Florida, the Dozier School for Boys, which was notorious for its abusive treatment of students. As such, the drama paints an incisive picture of deep-rooted racism and injustice in recent US history. The film was directed by RaMell Ross, who received an Oscar nomination in 2018 for his documentary HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING and made his feature debut with NICKEL BOYS.
