FromMagnus Gertten

Year2022

Duration92min.

Nelly & Nadine begin their lifelong love journey on Christmas Eve 1944. Belgian prisoner and opera singer Nelly Mousset-Vos had been asked to sing Christmas carols in a barracks inhabited by Frenchmen at Ravensbrück. After a few songs, a voice calls out from the darkness:
"Sing something by Madame Butterfly!"

Nelly hesitates, but then sings "Un bel di vedremo," an aria about waiting for a lover. Afterwards, the woman who had asked for the song steps out of the darkness. She kisses Nelly and says, "The good Lord has been kind to us today."

Her name is Nadine Hwang and Nelly and Nadine become a couple at that moment and spend as much time together as possible. But after two months, they are separated when Nelly is transferred to another camp. When they are liberated towards the end of the war, they manage to reunite and decide to build a life together. For many years, Nelly and Nadine's lifelong relationship was kept secret, even from some of their closest family members.

Now Nelly's granddaughter Sylvie has decided to open Nelly and Nadine's hidden private archives, and she discovers their remarkable story. Among them are photos, love letters and film reels.

The archive also contains a diary written by Nelly. In these previously unpublished personal notes, she tells her life story including details about falling in love amidst the horrors of a concentration camp, the complicated reunion with Nadine after the war, the decision to move to Venezuela to live their relationship freely - and recounts returning to Europe in the early 1970s to spend the last years of her life in Brussels.

Nelly & Nadine is a remarkable story about wartime suffering, mysteries, love against all odds, and the healing power of music; about well-kept secrets and the complicated family histories of concentration camp survivors still trying to come to terms with the ghosts of the past.
