Nawalny
An important film at the right time: The new documentary NAVALNY by Canadian director Daniel Roher shows in a shocking and captivating way the poison attack and attempted murder of Alexei Nawalny, the Russian opposition leader and "public enemy No. 1" of President Vladimir Putin.
The film starts with secret footage on the plane in which Nawalny was to be assassinated with the Russian nerve agent "Novichok" on his way to Siberia. He was only saved by an emergency landing and transfer to Berlin's Charité hospital - which his wife Julia pushed through against the wishes of the Russian government.
Like a political thriller, Daniel Roher documents and accompanies Nawalny in shocking and equally personal moments. From the poison attack on the plane, to his stay in Germany, to his return to Moscow. Immediately after landing, he was arrested at the airport on behalf of the Russian government. Since then, Alexei Nawalny has been in custody at the Pokrov penal camp near Moscow, which is considered particularly harsh. On March 22, 2022 - amid Russia's war of aggression on Ukraine - his sentence was extended to nine years in prison for alleged fraud. Nawalny's lawyers have appealed, demanding acquittal.
