Nacho Libre
A film about friendship, beautiful moustaches and a wrestling monk in Mexico. The epitome of the ‘inspired by true events’ subgenre, as interpreted by the great Mitch Hedberg: ‘Did you hear the story about that lady who drove her children into the river? Yes, I did, and it inspired me to write a film about a gorilla!’
In the case of Lucha Libre, the biographical background is that of Catholic priest Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez, who founded an orphanage and kept it financially afloat for 23 years by wrestling under the ring name ‘Fray Tormenta’ (Spanish for ‘Brother Storm’). (Video gamers may know Gutiérrez Benítez, perhaps without realising it, as the inspiration for the video game character ‘King’ in Tekken.)
