My Girl
Part of the SADFEST special series.
Vada Sultenfuss: Where are his glasses? He can't see without his glasses!
Vada (Anna Chlumsky) is eleven years old and lives in a funeral home; her mother died during childbirth. Her father (Dan Aykroyd) is friendly but absent. Her grandmother sings old songs when she's not apathetically silent. And Vada herself? She counts symptoms, writes poems, and is attached to a boy who is allergic to almost everything—except her. It's the summer of 1972.
Although the film is set in the past, it does not display nostalgia. Instead, it shows what childhood feels like when it is permeated by loss, without anyone talking about it. The camera stays close to Vada, watching her fall in love with a teacher, watching her become jealous when a new woman comes into the house. In moments of brief joy as well as profound loss, we are with her.
