My Fair Lady
In this romantic musical comedy, the flower girl Eliza Doolittle meets the eccentric linguistics professor Henry Higgins and his friend Colonel Pickering outside the London Opera House. Higgins makes contemptuous fun of her - partly because of her vulgar street language. But Eliza, who dreams of the big wide world and a better life, confidently turns up on his doorstep the next day to learn "proper" English from the boastful professor for a fee.
Higgins, who is convinced that accent and tone of voice determine a person's chances in society, bets Pickering, out of fun and scientific curiosity, that he can teach Eliza manners in six months. And that he could break her of the alleyway dialect to such an extent that she would pass as a proper lady at a ball in London's high society.
But until that happens, Eliza has to put up with Higgins' demanding teaching style and arrogant behaviour, suffer severe setbacks and human disappointments...
