Together with his partner Johnny, young Pakistani Omar refurbishes a run-down laundrette in south London. Much to the displeasure of Johnny's old mates from the far-right National Front... In this British cult film from the 1980s, Frears tackles the major issues of his time – racism, homophobia, the consequences of Thatcher's disastrous economic policies – in a light-hearted and humorous way, helping the young Daniel Day-Lewis make his breakthrough.
