On a train journey, Miss Marple observes a man strangling a woman in the carriage next to hers. However, as no body can be found, no one believes the old lady. So she investigates herself – with the help of librarian Stringer – armed with her knitting, her sharp mind and an enviable mixture of tenacity and humour... The first of a four-part Miss Marple film series, played by the iconic Margaret Rutherford, is the only one based on a Marple novel. Its creator is initially less than enthusiastic – partly because Rutherford's resolute performance contradicts the rather reserved detective in the novels. However, she recognises the extraordinary popularity that Rutherford brings to the character and shortly afterwards dedicates the novel The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side to her in appreciation.
