Muchachas de Uniforme

The legendary Mexican version of Leontine Sagan's classic of Weimar cinema, MÄDCHEN IN UNIFORM (D 1931), and the only one that ends like Christa Winsloe's theatre play on which the works are based, Ritter Nérestan or Gestern und Heute (1930). The individual-lesbian dimension of the story is in the background here - Bolongaro-Crevenna was more interested in the problem of patriarchal structures and how these alienate women from themselves; the Expressionist-style set emphasises this move towards abstraction. However, the vehemence with which the Catholic Church is condemned at the end is somewhat unexpected, especially in the context of 1950s Mexico.
