THE FILMS

Who doesn’t know him — the cinema icon with the toothbrush moustache, oversized trousers, bamboo cane, and bowler hat far too small? British comedian Charlie Chaplin (1889–1977) is considered the first global movie star and one of the most influential filmmakers in history.

The Adventurer (1917)

In the American short comedy The Adventurer, Charlie plays a desperate escaped convict fleeing the long arm of the law. In the midst of wild chases, he rescues two ladies from danger. A newspaper report about the celebration held in honor of the “hero” soon puts the prison warden back on Charlie’s trail.

The Cure (1917)

In the second silent film, The Cure, the fun-loving alcoholic Charlie checks into a health spa—at least supposedly to sober up. However, the liquor he has secretly brought along in his suitcase accidentally ends up in the spa’s healing spring, throwing the entire establishment into chaos.

These silent film classics are accompanied live by the music of the acoustic trio Folksmilch. Blending musical styles inspired by Mozart with their own distinctive sound and stylistic richness, the renowned Austrian ensemble creates a unique acoustic mélange.
