Loretta Castorini, a New York bookkeeper in her late 30s whose husband died in a bus accident a few years ago, is thinking about getting married again. And so she accepts the proposal of a nice young middle-aged man called Johnny Cammareri. Loretta is convinced that her first marriage was cursed, as she and her husband were married at City Hall.

This time she wants to do things right, even if she doesn't really love her future husband - something she admits to her mother Rose. Loretta is actually fully convinced that she is doing the right thing until she meets Johnny's younger and somewhat strange brother Ronny. What follows are complications that resemble a crazy opera...
