Moonage Daydream

FromBrett Morgen

WithDavid Bowie

Year2022

Duration140min.

Neither a documentary nor a biopic, but an immersive film experience’ - with MOONAGE DAYDREAM, Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture, Cobain: Montage of Heck, Jane) has created an unprecedented portrait of the exceptional artist David Bowie. Not only was he one of the most colourful personalities on the music scene, he was also a brilliant singer and songwriter who could surprise the world with his ever-changing musical style and look.

The David Bowie Estate gave the documentary filmmaker Morgen unique access to their archives, an honour that no filmmaker had ever been granted before. Their collection included rare and never-before-seen drawings, recordings, films and diaries. Morgen sifted through everything and spent four years putting the film together and another 18 months designing the soundscape, animations and colour palette. For the film, the sound team - consisting of Bowie's long-time collaborator, friend and music producer Tony Visconti and Oscar®-winning sound engineer Paul Massey (Bohemian Rhapsody) - remixed Bowie's original recordings and edited them for the big screen.

The result is an expressive collage of images and music, thoughts and inspirations, in which David Bowie himself even has his say for the most part. If you're not a Bowie fan before the film, you will be by the end of the 140 minutes. Even the idol's estate gave the film its blessing, even though they vehemently distanced themselves from every other predecessor. MOONAGE DAYDREAM celebrated its premiere at the renowned Cannes Film Festival in 2022, where it was shown out of competition and wowed the audience there.
