Monty Python’s Life of Brian
Born at the same time as Jesus, only in the stable next door, Brian is a victim of circumstances and becomes a pawn for both the Romans and the radicals who use him as a martyr. The film sparked fierce controversy about the role of the church and religion. Although a comedy, LIFE OF BRIAN describes the conditions during the Roman occupation in Israel better than most historical epics. With their characteristic ruthless humour, the Pythons show stonings, gladiator fights and rape. When many believers protested against the film after its release at the behest of their spiritual leaders (often without having seen it), the makers saw the core message of this timeless satire confirmed: "You should not follow anyone. You should think for yourselves!" (Klaus Davidowicz)
