When family members go to prison, the whole family suffers — especially the children. From one day to the next, nothing is the same as before: mothers or fathers suddenly become single parents, the material situation of families often deteriorates dramatically, and the loss of a dad, a wife, or a son plunges those left behind into grief, shame, guilt, doubt, and fear. Yet the Swiss justice system pays hardly any attention to the relatives of incarcerated people. “Security above all” is the attitude of a society that feels threatened from all sides. How many relatives of prisoners there are in Switzerland is unknown — because no data has been collected so far. It is estimated to be around 50,000 people, 9,000 of them children.

They are imprisoned as well — sufferers of a crime with which they had nothing to do.
