Mission: Impossible II
A rogue agent has acquired a killer virus, whereupon Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), the best man in the Impossible Mission Force, recruits his ex-girlfriend (Thandie Newton) to stop the villain under time pressure and prevent a pandemic. After Brian De Palma opened the Mission: Impossible film series with a successful blockbuster masquerade, John Woo was hired for the elaborate action choreography of the second part, around which the rest of the script was developed. Accordingly, most of the characters (apart from the main producer actor) remain pale, which fits in with the general atmosphere of James Bond exaggeration. On the other hand, Woo is allowed to let off steam with the action right up to the epic showdown, which may not reach the insanity of his Hong Kong highlights, but is still amazing by Hollywood standards. Balance: Woo versus Cruise - a draw. (Christoph Huber)
