Mission: Impossible
The agents of the Impossible Mission Force are sent to Prague to stop a traitor. But the mission ends in disaster: only agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) survives, whereupon he becomes the prime suspect and does everything in his power to find the real mastermind. The first Mission: Impossible film takes the clever deceptive manoeuvres of the original TV series to the extreme. The mask games and false trails are celebrated with the usual relish by the brilliant thriller stylist Brian De Palma: He masterfully orchestrates suspense (and amuses himself with Hitchcock variations) in sweat-inducing set pieces such as Ethan Hunt's break-in at CIA headquarters. For De Palma, the agent blockbuster was his last global success, for Tom Cruise the start of a successful series. (Christoph Huber)
