Milestones
‘The Anti-Nashville’ (Serge Daney), an epic film about the American counterculture, influenced by the work of Jacques Rivette: around 50 loosely connected characters, some playing scripted roles, some playing themselves, the vérité style so unaffected that one only gradually, almost incredulously at first, becomes aware of what is being staged. (In fact, Milestones has often been reviewed as a document.) An open weave of diary-like captured lives, a reflection of a lifestyle of that mobile, radical (mainly) white minority that was part of the civil rights movement of the 60s and sought more private paths in the 70s. One of the most powerful sketches of the era. Film journalist Thomas Brom: ‘Incredibly schizophrenic, fascinating and completely true.’ (Christoph Huber)
