‘I love people and I love life!’ This is how Mastroianni puts it in a nutshell in this extravagant and extremely profound portrait, which his partner of many years realised while working on Manoel de Oliveira's film. Oscillating between travelogue, film biography and philosophical reflections, the result is an extremely complex and coherent interweaving of screen persona and human being. In addition to excerpts and rare archive footage (including of an unrealised Fellini film), the visibly weakened Mastroianni also impresses as an extraordinary narrator.
