A student returns from St. Petersburg to his Georgian home village and is commissioned by the farmers, who are threatened with the confiscation of their forest, to defend their rights. At the local authorities, he is confronted with an opaque bureaucracy that serves the interests of dubious businessmen. Shot in stark black and white, Alexandre Rechwiaschwili creates a dark, Kafkaesque atmosphere in the middle section of his trilogy about 19th century Georgia, which is characterised by powerlessness in the face of the ruling apparatus.
