Metropolis

FromFritz Lang

WithFritz Rasp, Gustav Fröhlich, Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, Rudolf Klein-Rogge

Year1926

Duration153min.

"Fritz Lang's science fiction film about the rebellion of the working class against the dominant upper class in the future city of Metropolis is one of the most important restorations in film history. In 2001, METROPOLIS became the first film to be included in UNESCO's documentary heritage." (Murnau Foundation)

High above the city of Metropolis, Joh Fredersen rules while workers toil below ground. Fredersen's son Freder falls in love with the workers' leader Maria. At the same time, Rotwang, the inventor, creates a steel robot, which he gives the appearance of Maria on Fredersen's instructions. The fake Maria incites the workers to abandon their machines, triggering the flooding of the city. Can Fredersen and Maria's efforts save the city?

To conclude our series, we present one of the most famous silent films and one of the most important cinematic masterpieces of all time. Hardly any other film of Weimar cinema has left as many traces in film history, but also in pop culture in general, as METROPOLIS.
