Memoirs of an Invisible Man
Stockbroker Nick Halloway (Chevy Chase) sneaks out of a boring lecture at a shareholders' meeting to take a nap on the couch. He oversleeps the laboratory accident in the basement that renders part of the office building invisible – including Nick. An overzealous CIA agent (Sam Neill) is hot on his heels, while Nick tries to hide out with his lover (Daryl Hannah). Carpenter's original take on the Invisible Man theme entertainingly combines thriller, comedy and romance with a dash of social criticism: the superficial yuppie protagonist is transformed by the experience. With innovative special effects, invisibility is evoked as a danger rather than, as is usually the case, an opportunity. Nevertheless, it was an undeserved flop upon its release: too serious for a Chevy Chase comedy, too cheerful for a Carpenter film. (C.H.)
