Meet Me in St. Louis
Part of the special series JOLLY SEASON
Esther Smith: Oh, Tootie, don’t cry. Don’t cry, it’s all right. You can build other snow people in New York.
Tootie Smith: No, you can’t! You can’t do any of the things that I can do in St. Louis!
A year in the life of the Smith family, told over four seasons: Meet Me in St. Louis begins in the summer of 1903 and ends with the spring of the 1904 World’s Fair. At its center is Esther (Judy Garland), who falls in love with the boy next door, John Truett. But when the father announces that the family will move to New York, their happiness seems doomed — until Christmas changes everything.
The film is a kaleidoscope of music, romance, and family rituals. Judy Garland sings “The Trolley Song” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” the latter becoming an evergreen. Vincente Minnelli’s direction — he later married Garland — is a triumph of color, costume, and emotional nuance.
