McCabe & Mrs. Miller
It is the beginning of the 20th century when professional gambler McCabe arrives in an icy mining town. The town is under construction and McCabe is used to betting his fortune on the future: A saloon with a brothel attached is to make him a rich man. This is where Mrs Miller and her sisters of mercy come into play ... Altman debunks both the American dream and its prophet, the western genre, which he strips of myth and glamour. What remains are the temptations of wealth - and those who succumb to them. A macabre lesson in capitalism that, underlined by atmospheric camerawork and dreamy Leonard Cohen songs, shines wondrously in a unique atmosphere of snow and oil lights. (Florian Widegger)
