Gracie Atherton-Yu (Julianne Moore) and her husband Joe (Charles Melton) are preparing for the high school graduation of their twins, who will be moving into their dormitory during the summer holidays. Apparently the scandal surrounding the couple, which occurred twenty years ago when Gracie's affair with Joe dominated the tabloid front pages, has died down, mainly because Joe was 23 years her junior.

Just before her graduation, famous and popular Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman) arrives to visit the family and spend some time with them, as her next project is based on Gracie's life and she wants to better understand the past and the choices made for her role. Her arrival begins to shake up the couple, who have to deal with the realities of living in an empty nest and a significant age difference.
