Matthäus-Passion

FromERNST MARISCHKA

WithRAOUL ASLAN (STIMME)

Year1949

Duration95min.

Marischka once revealed that he prefers to give the audience what he himself would like to see in the cinema and that he sheds a tear or two during many scenes in his films. However, the declared favourite film among his works is MATTHÄUS-PASSION - although it is preceded by the tragic death of his only daughter Mady. Instead of ideal-world romanticism, the first music film in the history of film to do entirely without actors consists of shots of paintings by great Baroque masters and excerpts from Bach's oratorio (the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Herbert von Karajan) and perhaps it is precisely this carefree simplicity that conveys how world-weariness and beauty go together in art. An extremely rare opportunity to discover this forgotten gem!
