Matarsak – Die Vogelscheuche
The genocide of hundreds of thousands of Armenians between 1915 and 1923 in the Ottoman Empire forms an almost invisible foundation for Houchang Allahyari's new film, which he once again conceived together with Iranian director Babak Behdad. The film centres on the encounter between a soldier and Lida, a young woman who roams the fields dressed as a scarecrow, causing incomprehension among the older generation. In the cemetery, she converses with the dead: she is a descendant of a culture characterised by music and dance, which has been banned since the 1979 revolution. Against the impressive natural backdrop of the Caspian Sea, a profound story unfolds that recalls the past and yet could not be more relevant to the present: the longing for freedom.
