Masters of Horror: Cigarette Burns / Pro-Life
After his temporary retirement from film directing, Carpenter caused a stir once again with his brilliant one-hour episodes for the television series Masters of Horror. The episode Cigarette Burns in particular was met with cult worship and can be seen as an extreme continuation of ideas from In the Mouth of Madness: the only copy of the legendary film La fin absolue du monde, which caused a murderous mass panic at its festival premiere, must be found for an eccentric cinephile (Udo Kier!). Pro-Life combines a typical Carpenter-style siege situation with horror elements and satirical jibes at US fundamentalism: a girl wants to terminate her ominous pregnancy at a women's clinic, but her father (Ron Perlman!), a militant anti-abortionist, wants to prevent this at all costs.
