Masques
The senior citizens' television programme ‘Happiness for All’ has made showmaster Christian Legagneur (a splendid role for Philippe Noiret) a TV celebrity. With sentimental charm, he caters to his contestants' desires. When a young journalist wants to write his biography, it flatters Legagneur's vanity, but in the seclusion of his luxury villa, another side of him is revealed. And it's not just the patriarchal star who wears a professional mask – everyone is playing a double game... Claude Chabrol's free adaptation of Charlotte Armstrong's magnificent crime novel The Unsuspected (and its 1948 film adaptation of the same name by Michael Curtiz, with Claude Rains as a hypocritical radio presenter) relishes in painting a picture of a society ruled by lies and greed – the false promises of television are its perfect counterpart. An underrated film of perfidious sophistication. (C.H.)
