Marius et Olive à Paris
Marius et Olive à Paris belongs to Epstein's purely “commercial” productions, but as his only comedy, it is nevertheless an unusual work: it tells the story of the adventures of a couple from Marseille in Paris. Epstein was reportedly not very happy with the production and only agreed to it so that he could pursue his passion projects. Unfortunately, the result was not a success with critics or at the box office and is now virtually forgotten. Nevertheless, upon rediscovery, the film can be seen as a remarkable example of how the director's much-praised “rural sensibility” works in urban settings. The rhythms and illusions of (metropolitan) modernity prove to be a challenge to the provincial idea of romance. Epstein's searching eye finds images for the intimacy and alienation of city life.
