A film as distinctive and memorable as its intriguingly unusual title: Mario, Maria, Marinel – MMM tells the story of Maria (Diana Decuseara-Onica), who lives with her son Marinel (Gabriel Litcan) in a typical Moldovan village; her husband – and his father – is absent due to work abroad. Each day resembles the next until Maria’s childhood friend Felicia (Valentina Nafornita), a soprano based in Vienna, unexpectedly returns, bringing her husband Mario (Leo Rudenco) along. Emotional tensions soon follow.
A poetic meditation on migration and relationships, the film sensitively explores the (sometimes painful) intersections between impersonal socioeconomic forces and individual human longings. (NY)

Produced by three talented classmates from the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) in Bratislava, Drowned Places is an ecologically minded fable that demonstrates the remarkable strength of animation emerging from this region of Europe in recent years.
It tells the story of two siblings living on a small concrete island, where they fish in the sea for remnants of a submerged civilization. They build a boat and plan to sail toward a distant shore shimmering enticingly on the horizon. But things do not go as planned, forcing them into a fateful decision.
A resonant little gem of urgent relevance and considerable aesthetic appeal. (NY)
