Marina Abramovic in Brazil: The Space Between

FromMarco Del Fiol

Year2016

Duration86min.

LanguageEnglish

A fascinating spiritual journey through Brazil with Serbian performance artist Marina Abramović. She seeks personal healing for her emotional pain and artistic inspiration, experiences sacred rituals, and seeks out healers and wise men across Brazil. Director Marco Aurélio del Fiol accompanied her on this journey and created a unique blend of road movie, direct cinema, performance documentary, and spiritual thriller. The film portrays the diverse spiritual aspects of Brazilian culture as well as the intimate creative process of one of the most important artists of our time.

“Maria Callas died of a broken heart,” says Abramović, “I don't want that to happen to me.” Physical pain doesn't bother her, but she wants to heal her emotional pain in Brazil. She embarks on a journey through Brazil's various healing techniques, from herbal and crystal treatments, a “psychic surgeon,” and shamanic processes to the psychedelic substance ayahuasca. Her spiritual journey takes her to Chapada Dos Veadeiros, Vale Do Amanhecer in Brasilia, Bahia, Chapada Diamantina, Curitiba, and Minas Gerais, among other places.
