In 1768, the Austrian Archduchess Marie Antoinette arrives at the court of Versailles to marry the French Dauphin. Initially amused, she adapts to the awkward etiquette. Louis postpones the consummation of the marriage; frustrated, Marie Antoinette indulges in royal idleness. It was only when an heir to the throne finally emerged that "the Austrian" was accepted by the courtiers. Disinterested in political affairs, she begins an affair with a Swedish nobleman. Marie Antoinette ignores the fact that public opinion turns against her in the run-up to the French Revolution ... "I find her delightful. She looks like a tart." Light colours in pastel shades dominate the state gowns of the "fashion queen" Marie Antoinette, while the "dream dress" of the self-confident court mistress du Barry is in a strong blue. The authentic dress cuts are contrasted by anachronistic accessories. Sofia Coppola and Milena Canonero were not interested in depicting the era with historical accuracy. Rather, style icons and "shopping queens" of the present can see themselves reflected in Marie Antoinette.
