Marianne, meine Jugendliebe

FromJulien Duvivier

WithMarianne Hold, Horst Buchholz, Udo Vioff, Jean Yonnel, u.a.

Year1955

Duration108min.

Victor Loringer (Horst Buchholz) is the new arrival at a Bavarian boarding school and enchants his comrades with his guitar playing and songs from his distant homeland, earning him the nickname "The Argentinian". One day, when he rows to the other side of the lake with the "band of robbers" among the boarding school pupils to explore a legendary haunted house, he meets the beautiful Marianne (Marianne Hold), who speaks in riddles and to whom he loses his heart. An idiosyncratic mixture of coming-of-age novel, horror romance and ethereal fantasy, in which Duvivier is able to fully realize many of the ideas that have driven him since the beginning of his career, not least in fairytale-like images of nature and a dreamlike atmosphere. The director already proved his polyglot nature at the beginning of the sound film era by shooting different language versions simultaneously: Don Camillo and Marianne follows on from this in the 1950s; we are showing the original German version here (there is also a French version).
