Mariana’s Room
1943 in Chernivtsi, western Ukraine: To save him from deportation, Yulia, a Jewish woman, entrusts her eleven-year-old son Hugo to her childhood friend Mariana, who works as a prostitute in a brothel. German soldiers come and go daily. Locked in the small wardrobe of Mariana's bedroom, Hugo's existence consists of sounds and scenes he hears through the walls. Through high-contrast lighting effects, the camera translates Hugo's fantasies into striking images. But when the clients have left, Mariana invites the boy into her room and envelops him in gentleness and care.
