Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie) is probably the greatest soprano of all time. But she has not been seen in public for years. Despite the best efforts of her cook Bruna (Alba Rochwacher) and her butler Ferruccio (Pierfrancesco Favino), who takes the best possible care of her, the diva subsists almost exclusively on pills. These mood enhancers ensure that Maria Callas still believes in an unlikely comeback. Callas also feels confirmed in this when television reporter Mandrax (Kodi-Smit-McPhee) visits her for an interview. As she reminisces, she once again visualises a time that, in her eyes, is not yet over. The stage still calls to her. But the reality is different, because on 16 September 1977, the completely emaciated singer is found dead on the floor of the living room of her huge Parisian flat...
