Manthan
The result of this early crowdfunding campaign, in which 500,000 farmers donated two rupees each to finance the production of MANTHAN, is also a captivating film about the power of the collective: in a village in north-west India, a local dairy owner dictates the prices. Those who do not sell to him are left with their milk. A vet from the city offers the farmers the prospect of higher earnings and more independence if they set up a co-operative and work together to achieve their goals ... This ‘white revolution’ began in the early 1970s. The film was shot at the original locations and ensured that the transformation of milk production - and subsequently that of society - continued to progress in India. (Florian Widegger)
