Manhattan
In Woody Allen’s classic of the intellectual romantic comedy, love interests intersect while the characters struggle to put their feelings into words. Urban neurotic Isaac attempts to express his love for Manhattan by writing a book, only to find himself instead entangled in a complex relationship with his best friend’s lover. In the background stands the ever-changing yet familiar city, captured in beautiful wide-angle shots and accompanied by George Gershwin’s rousing music. Rapid-fire dialogue full of references to film and philosophy lends the film a lively rhythm—while, in retrospect, some parallels to Allen’s own life appear unsettling.
