Making a Man of Her
At the heart of this programme are three films starring Edna ‘Billy’ Foster, a child actress who, between the ages of eight and 14, mostly played the roles of wild boys in films produced by the Biograph Company. As ‘Little Billy,’ she falls in love with her teacher, falls into the hands of two dangerous vagrants, and returns her unwelcome newborn sibling to its rightful owner at the zoo: the stork. The three works are framed by an episode of the popular adventure series THE GIRL SPY, which takes us back to the American Civil War, and a comedy in which a woman literally has to stand in for her husband.
