Madeinusa

FromClaudia Llosa

Year2005

Duration100min.

LanguageSpanish

Fourteen-year-old Madeinusa lives with her single father in a remote village in the Peruvian Andes. But she feels trapped by the narrowness of village life and her difficult family circumstances, and dreams of escaping to Lima, just like her mother did. The annual highlight of village life is Semana Santa, a boisterous religious festival during which all inhibitions are cast aside. Madeinusa is given the special honor of leading the traditional procession as the “Holy Virgin.”

When, during the festivities, the young photographer Salvador arrives to document the celebration with his camera, he falls in love with Madeinusa. As the two slowly grow closer, she is forced to make a difficult decision.

Madeinusa tells the moving story of a young woman’s attempt at self-discovery within a contradictory environment, situated somewhere between melodrama and a documentary-style portrayal of village microcosm life. Claudia Llosa’s inventive and gripping feature debut is filled with humor and further impresses with the intense performances of its cast and the striking images of the beautiful highlands of Huaraz.

“An ironic fable about the clash between old and new.” (film.at)
