A slow death. Over four hours, the shipwreck of a dream, agonizingly endured, step by step. According to Visconti, the second Ludwig of Bavaria possessed the exceptional ability to live outside of reality, as well as the equally exceptional inability to find his way within it. A requiem for Europe's last monarch with absolute bearing, who refuses to engage in politics, preferring to rule with artists rather than ministers in his longing, but in reality allows the utopia of beauty to be created by means of power as his private chamber. Hypnotized, Luchino Visconti turns to the aesthetics of the 19th century. The amorphous is accompanied by a closeness to the hero's diffuse cult of beauty. As a master of contradiction, Visconti has Romy Schneider burst out laughing at the kitsch of Herrenchiemsee. The rest is powerlessness and downfall. (H.T.)
