Ariane, the daughter of a private detective, enjoys secretly snooping through her father’s case files. He is currently tailing a supposedly unfaithful wife who is meeting a wealthy American—one who exerts a fascinating pull on Ariane herself. A tender romance develops between the two, carried by Wilder’s characteristically dry humor. Hepburn imbues Ariane with a blend of innocence and determination—a girl who grows up too soon, yet still believes in love.
