Lost in Translation
In Sofia Coppola's second feature film after THE VIRGIN SUICIDES, two American souls are lost in the Japanese capital, not only in the face of language barriers, but also with regard to their own future. Actor Bob, who is shooting a commercial in Tokyo, and Charlotte, who is accompanying her partner on his business trip after graduating in philosophy, turn lonely evenings in a foreign city into a shared experience - tired from jet lag but sleepless, the unlikely couple roam the streets at night. Coppola breaks with the usual narratives of romantic relationships, creates a melancholy mood bathed in colourful night lights and, with her opening sequence, triggered plenty of discussion about possible interpretations.
