Year1965

Duration154min.

Young James "Jim" Burke begins a promising career in the British merchant navy, but during a storm, in a moment of weakness, abandons a ship entrusted to him and the passengers stuck on board. He is the only crew member to stand trial and is dishonourably discharged.

To restore his reputation, he accepts a dangerous assignment: A businessman asks Jim to deliver weapons to the remote settlement of Patusan in the jungles of Indonesia to help the local inhabitants defend themselves against a ruthless tyrant, the "General".

In the 19th century, the British colonial territories of Southeast Asia were the scene of violent conflicts over power and resources. With Jim's courageous help and thanks to the weapons he supplies, the inhabitants of Patusan manage to repel the General and keep him at bay.

Shortly afterwards, another threat appears in the form of "Gentleman Brown", an unscrupulous pirate who wants to take the defeated general's treasure. Jim negotiates a truce with him and pledges his life to the villagers that no one will be killed if Brown is allowed to leave peacefully. But Jim is deceived and a serious death occurs during the fighting. His honour is put to the test one last time...
