Liebeskonzil

Oskar Panizza's play describes the sinful behaviour of people during the Renaissance, when God convenes a heavenly council and discusses with Mary, Jesus and the devil how they can punish people but still redeem their souls in order to have subjects for the kingdom of heaven. The devil is commissioned to carry out such a punishment. He begets a daughter with Salome, who goes to the court of the dissolute Borgia Pope Alexander VI and from there spreads syphilis among the people. The film's frame story is the blasphemy trial against the author in 1895.
