Since the 1970s, lesbians from all over the world have been travelling to the island of Lesbos, the birthplace of the ancient Greek poet Sappho. In the following decades, an active lesbian community developed in the coastal village of Eressos, where women were finally able to live and love openly and freely. Today there is a lesbian bar in the village as well as several hotels and restaurants run exclusively by and for women. On the beach, the women are among themselves. Even though most of the locals have shown solidarity with the women over the years, there have always been conflicts with conservative villagers who felt threatened by the lesbians. The history of the lesbian community of Eressos is lesbian cultural history, which the film reconstructs, writes and carries forward. LESVIA has been celebrated at festivals around the world and has received numerous awards.
