Satan sends two messengers, a woman and a man, to a medieval castle for an engagement party to cause discord in his name. However, the willing pactors fail - like the devil himself when he appears in person - because of the true affection of the young lovers. Carné uses the legendary material, which can be understood as an allegory of current events, to offer veiled resistance to the German occupation. (Brigitte Mayr)
