The year is 1815: After nineteen years of hard labor, violence, and suffering for the theft of a loaf of bread, Jean Valjean is released from prison. Filled with rage and a deep sense of injustice, he has become a dangerous man who trusts no one. He wanders desperately through the south of France, seeking shelter in a small village, but is repeatedly turned away. Unbeknownst to him, Jean Valjean finds refuge and hospitality in the home of Bishop Bienvenu, who leads a simple life with his sister and his maid.
